Making Headlines at SC18 with Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards

Dell EMC brings homes three HPCwire awards — for workforce diversity, data analytics and HPC in life sciences.

In any business, it’s always gratifying when people in your field take the time to recognize you for some of the good things you are doing. That was the case this week at the SC18 supercomputing conference in Dallas when HPCwire named Dell EMC as the recipient of three awards.

The publication presented Dell EMC with the Readers’ Choice Award for “Workforce Diversity Leadership” and the Editors’ Choice Awards for “Best Use of High Performance Data Analytics” and “Best Use of HPC in Life Sciences.” The awards are determined through a nomination and voting process within the global HPCwire community, as well as selections from the HPCwire editors.

Here’s a look at the work that led to the awards.

Reader’s Choice Award: Workforce Diversity Leadership Award:  Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), Cambridge University, South Africa’s Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC), Dell EMC and South Africa’s Department of Science & Technology were recognized for the HPC Ecosystems Project. That project is focused on the distribution and deployment of decommissioned HPC hardware as mid-tier systems to research institutions in Africa.

Editor’s Choice Award: Best Use of High Performance Data Analytics:  AeroFarms and Dell Technologies worked together to enable IoT- and machine learning-driven farms that use no herbicides, pesticides or fertilizer and require 95 percent less water to produce fresh produce. (For a closer look at this project, see our Harvesting Insights case study.)

Editor’s Choice Award: Best Use of HPC in Life Sciences:  An international team led by San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and the University of California San Diego (UCSD) used the petascale Comet supercomputer, built by Dell EMC, to explain inherited variants of non-coding DNA related to the Autism Spectrum Disorder.

At Dell EMC, we are proud to have played a part in all of these successes, and we are gratified to be recognized for our contributions.
