Collaborating for Innovation to Drive Wireless Private Network Advancements

Through harnessing the potential of WPNs and edge technologies, industry leaders have formed an ecosystem of innovation to develop new business models, products and services using integrated solutions. Let’s take a closer look at some of the industries utilizing these technologies.

Mining

WPNs can help mining companies automate their operations cost-effectively, improve resiliency and uptime, and increase efficiency, while also providing a safer working environment through more reliable technologies than traditional networks such as Wi-Fi. WPNs can coexist harmoniously with other networks and are easier to scale in harsh environments. For example, NORCAT, together with Rogers and Dell, launched the Mining Technology Innovation Challenge to help startups improve safety, productivity and sustainability in the mining industry using WPN and MEC.

Transportation

Public 5G technology is also transforming the transportation industry. Rogers and the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN), which is led by the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI) through support from the Government of Ontario, launched the 5G Transportation Challenge to accelerate wireless innovation in the transportation sector by building a safer, cleaner and more efficient transportation system. The competition winner was an autonomous delivery fleet of robots powered by MEC and connected with Rogers 5G.

Manufacturing

Over the next five years, manufacturing plants will need WPNs to stay competitive and support the rapid transition to industry 4.0. Automation use cases in manufacturing require wireless coverage over large areas that provide high bandwidth, ultra-low latency and high security, for which cellular LTE/5G technology offers superior performance and reliability.

Dell Technologies has extensive experience providing the technology platform for manufacturing innovation centers, enabling them to construct digital twin factories based on the metaverse to optimize their operations, enhance quality and improve safety.

Ports

WPNs offer ports seamless connectivity over large areas, which is critically important for safely automating cargo loading/offloading with semi/fully automated vehicles and equipment navigating the site. WPNs can help boost efficiency, reduce cargo theft and costs for ports, while also helping to provide a safer working environment.

As automation requirements continue to increase, businesses need to enable innovative use cases in mining, transportation, manufacturing and ports, and invest in extending their corporate network to mission-critical assets while maintaining control of bandwidth, uptime and data security. By collaborating with the ecosystem and leveraging WPNs and edge technologies, heavy industries can optimize their systems and drive growth.
